In My Burqa is a series of clay figures I sculpt
as a meditation on the nature of freedom.
Every morning I wake and put on my burqa even though I’m not Muslim and I live in a free country. I still have certain cultural restrictions placed on me because I’m a female person. These cultural mores are placed on me, but I contribute by putting on this “burqa,” meaning these restrictions, of my own free will. I could refuse to put them on and wear something else today.
I intend that this sculpting activity will work on my spirit for the benefit of my next incarnation at which time I hope to be more informed, less compliant, and bolder than my present self.
